Can you imagine your childhood without an education? A childhood without learning, without playing
amongst friends… You see, an education is about so much more than learning to read and write – it’s about
socialisation; it's about getting a start in life.... |
School 4 All in Africa is the selected partner charity for the 2008-2009 Rotary year. Run by Leonard Cheshire Disability it is a new inclusive education programme which is being set up and implemented from scratch while drawing on the experiences and successes of their inclusive education programme in Kenya. Inclusive education is about much, much more than buildings and adaptations. It is about communities, families, the government and all environmental aspects that need to be improved before good learning in an inclusive environment can start – this is key to the development of a school.
District 1010 has been partnered with Budaka FHP School. Budaka FHP is located in the Pallisa District which, like most Ugandan districts, is named after its chief town. |
 |
The district has nine small lakes and one major lake; Lake Kyoga and is mainly a plateau which encompasses many swamps and springs. Subsistence farming in maize, sweet potato, bananas, beans and more is the main source of livelihood.
Budaka FHP has 2,252 pupils and 26 teachers and has poor and inadequate classroom blocks and is in a very poor state of repair. Classrooms are overcrowded having around 100 -120 pupils per class with children seated on the floor. This has been one of the barriers witnessed to teaching/inclusion of disabled children. Some children trek as long as five kilometres to school as a result of lack of transport facilities. Excluded children do not receive any support and therefore do not have access to education at all. Schools require educational resources, a change of attitude towards disability, teacher training and work with the government to implement inclusive education strategies |
 |
Work is currently being undertaken by Leonard Cheshire Disability to establish the remedial works required. These are likely to include new windows, new ramps and widening of verandas, toilets as well as roof improvements and rainwater disposal systems. Floor improvements and decoration are required as well as fixtures and fittings such as pinboards and blackboards.
Also required is the funding for work within communities, disability aids, teacher training costs, resource centres, child to child clubs, parent/carer training and so on.
District Governor David is working very closely with representatives of Leonard Cheshire Disability locally in Edinburgh and we are being kept up to date with progress on Schools4All. |
